Essay Crisis | How I Write My Essays Oxford Uni Vlog // Oxford Diaries #13

hello everyone and welcome or welcome back to my channel if you’re new here my name is Kailyn I am a master’s student here at the University of Oxford joining history and today I wanted to start a little weekend in my life I’m currently writing an essay. I figure this would probably be a good time to take you guys along. I can kind of walk you through the process but I also wanted this to be a little bit more of an interactive slog I’ve been trying to change up my editing style. that way none of my vlogs are like entirely the same some of my videos are going to be more b-roll heavy to show you guys a little bit more what I’m doing and then videos like this are going to be a little bit more interactive and I’m going to be talking to you guys about certain things that I’ve been asked on Instagram or in the comment section of my videos and today I’m going to be talking particularly about how I am writing my essays and how I prepare my essays and on top of that I had a comment on my last video asking for me to talk a little bit about journaling I currently use my supplied by Lily astrology notebook or journal I’m going to link it down below I love this notebook I love the supplied by Lily stationery line. I’ve been really enjoying this and what I’ve been trying to do is every couple days I will pull out my journal and write some things that I’m thinking about and sometimes there’s the pressure to write a full page and I think what you need to do is just read the things that are on your mind less. feeling like you have to fill out a full page like today I only filled out a half page and then perhaps my next entry will be a full page or one and a half pages or more I think journaling is a great way to kind of assess where you’re at and that’s why I really enjoy doing YouTube as well as having my journal because it’s a way for me to catalogue the things that I’m going through especially when I meant this kind of pivotal moment in my life I have applied for PhD programs that I’m currently waiting to hear back I should start getting decisions back as early as next week. it’s a very nerve-wracking time for me and my future is rather uncertain I have a lot of responsibilities here as a graduate student there’s a lot of things I want to do with my YouTube Instagram and eventually hopefully start a podcast. there’s just a lot of things that I want to do even while I am a graduate student to help other students including building up my counseling business I offer consultations I offer free consultations for thirty minutes to anyone who wants help with undergraduate admissions as well as masters admissions at Oxbridge just keep that in mind if you guys ever want some help just shoot me an email and we can schedule a consultation but overall I have a lot of things on my plate and a lot of things on my mind therefore.

I have been using my journal as a way to write that down as well as using YouTube as a way to also flesh out my experiences and what’s on my mind I also use journaling as a form of self talk. what I mean by that is that I will use my journal to kind of give myself advice sometimes it’s helpful if you can try to remove yourself from your own circumstances and your own reality. if my friend were in the position that I am right now what advice would I give them and. what I try to do in my journal is give myself that advice that I would have given a friend and that has really helped me and has really helped me get through some really tough times. that’s something I would suggest about journaling I don’t really have a super set schedule it’s really just I try to do it in the mornings every couple days and sometimes it’s every other day sometimes it’s everyday sometimes it’s once a week I’m trying to do it a little bit more than I used to and the way that I do that is instead of doing in an evening I’ve been doing it first thing in the morning currently in the process of beginning work on my essay and once I have a solid idea of where I’m at with it then I will show you I’m pretty much going to start with the outline and I’m also going to start thinking about what I want to use as my hook I had a particular 17th century quote that I was using before but because I want to shift the focus of my paper just a little bit I think I’m going to use a different example. I typically start all of my essays with a quote I’m with a primary source and. that’s what I’m gonna be looking for right now alright. let’s get into it all right. I’ve been working for a couple hours I think I have a general structure for the SI y si that I’m currently writing it as an expanded version of a previous essay that I had written but there’s certain sections that I want to add to it. I’m looking at the origin of slave laws in the British Atlantic. looking at the British American colonies and the British Caribbean primarily during the 17th century and looking at what historians have said about the origins and kind of which legal precedents the colonists were borrowing from if they are borrowing from it at all I want to also add a discussion about the difference between the establishment of laws and using precedent but also how economic factors play into that and kind of what is the point in which laws are then enacted because human beings have been enslaving others since pretty much the beginning of humanity and. establishing a legal code for slavery basically is taking it a step further but that’s not to say that all colonists kind of follow a law or that they even needed laws in order to enslave others. anyway it’s kind of difficult to explain but the general gist is I’m adding a section kind of explaining why laws were enacted and how they were enacted and then I want to go into different precedents I just went down to gales I picked up some lunch I just have a mozzarella sandwich. I’m gonna eat it take a little bit of a break watch YouTube video or to eat some lunch and keep working by the way if you guys have any interest and what I do when I take my breaks I’m currently watching a lecture or a book talk with David blight and Tony he see Coates about Frederick Douglass and I was a lecturer put on by the Gilder Lehrman Center. I’m watching this or listening to this lecture while also digging through footnotes and that is how I know I am meant to be an academic [Applause] [Applause] all right. I’m back from the library and I have been doing a little bit of work and I’m actually making quite a bit of progress I was looking at some of the feedback that I got from one of my professors on my original essay and he said try to see if there’s a way to track historiographical trends within the particular like subsets of argument. in order to kind of track that I what I do is that I brain map and. what I’ll do is I will write out a kind of diagram of the central argument and then kind of what I think the arguments around that are and those will act as my body paragraphs. for example the middle says the origin of slave lost in the brush Atlantic which is the title of the paper and then looking eyes I based on Roman law borrowed from France or Spain economic factors in colonial invention or that there was basis in common law I also put other but there didn’t really seem to be any other particular arguments and then what I’ll do from there is as I go and read the articles as historians make arguments that I could use in the paper I will then write their name and the date of that paper and then I will then make a timeline to show kind of where they fall and that kind of helps me just visually map out how the paper is going to kind of be organized that’s kind of that kind of acts as my outline if and then I will go into my essay notes which is where I pulled quotes and pulled sources and then I will kind of have that next to where I’m writing the essay. that way I have something to kind of go off of and also typing out all the quotes from the books is super helpful because then all you have to do is copy paste it over into the essay. just just a little hint for you guys as you write your own essays but now Mike HOF for some reason is really bad. I’m actually gonna take a break because I’ve actually made a lot of progress and and I’ll see you guys in a little bit good morning everyone. this is the next day I got it this morning a bit to eat did a little bit of work and then honestly was just. tired for him staying up really late last night that I decided I would just take another nap before brunch. that way I could power through and I’m really glad I did not because I feel a lot better now and I’m about to head off to brunch in Hall with my friends then I’m gonna go get a coffee go to the graduate study space and then I have to make a quick trip to the vir Harmsworth library I have to pick up you have another book. that is the plan for today I need to get my paper fish today I’m I have about say about 2,000 words left which I’m not too worried about. far the draft is coming along pretty well I’m but I just want it to be as perfect as it can be because obviously it’s my first graded mark here at Oxford and I would like to graduate with the distinction since hopefully I’m starting my ph.d program next year and I’m sure that’s going to be contingent on me doing well in this program but I don’t think said I went out with my friends last night too well the MC are here at Somerville had a bob last night which for Americans is basically just a party or a kickback there was music and dancing and there was alcohol but I didn’t really drink because I am still getting over being really sick and. I thought all it takes this one bad night to send you back spiraling and I cannot afford to be sick anymore I just I can’t handle it.

I decided to abstain from drinking alcohol and drink lots of water and just stayed up late and hung out with my friends which was honestly really fun I’m really glad that I did that because I honestly would have regretted missing out on it I think it’s really important to have a balance between your academic work but also creating memories and having personal experiences and be MCR events or something that I don’t want to miss out on especially because I’m only here for a year and although I never brought I never went out I never partied when I was at UCLA there was also not of events that I really felt like I was missing out on whereas here they’re quite tame and quite wholesome I’m especially for graduate students. I try to attend as many events as possible like welfare teas and bops and wine and cheese exchanges and formal dinners and that kind of stuff because it’s all part of the Oxford experience and I don’t want it myself. that all being said I’m gonna go ahead and pack up my bag because I’m going to grab brunch and go straight to the study space because if I come back to my room then who knows how productive I’d actually be. I think it’s important to change up your study space as much as possible even though I need to actually listen to my own advice a little bit more because I tend to just stay in my room I’m gonna go to the graduate study space today and we’re have a good for docu today that is my plan. into it all right. it’s now been a little while and I am still working in the study space everybody has left or at least for a little while inside the room to myself. I just wanted to check in really quick I am about a thousand words into the essay out of about five thousand and that doesn’t necessarily mean that there aren’t pieces that haven’t already been written I’m just kind of rewriting to make sure that I’m getting everything that I need because I’m adding two whole new sections but I picked up some of the books that I thought would be helpful from the veer Harmsworth and I’m just gonna keep chipping away on it’s slowly it’s going well I just one of my one of the comments when professor made was to add a little bit more context as to what sources they are using. I’m trying to write a whole section about the methodologies that the historians are using but also making a clear differential between social and legal historians as well as legal scholars because I’m also trying to track historiographical trends and if you guys don’t know what that means that basically just means that there are certain like schools of thought within the scholarship that we try to follow. that all being said I think somebody’s about to walk in the room. I’m going to keep working all right. it is about seven o’clock I went out to grab some pizza with my friends as a little treat in between finishing my essay. I’m just packing my room because nobody else is studying in the study space. I figured I would come back to my room and I’m just gonna keep working . I decided to take a break because I feel brain-dead and now I have zero motivation to get up and finish because I have honestly put in. much effort into this essay and I’m actually really happy with it it seems I feel like it’s some of the best work I’ve actually ever done but now I just don’t have enough to keep going. I’m not quite sure what to do I think like everything in me is telling me that I want to go to sleep but then I’m not gonna have enough time tomorrow unless they woke up super early and you know the game where you tell yourself you’re gonna wake up early to get work done and then you wake up in the morning and you reason with yourself as to why you’re allowed to sleep another hour to like I know that’s what’s gonna happen. I do need to actually get this done tonight I just want to sleep maybe I’ll nap maybe I’ll take a nap and then I’ll keep working it’s not that late.

I could probably nap without falling asleep like entirely right all right. by some miracle I managed to pry myself out of bed I lay down for like 45 minutes and just tried to do anything that wasn’t thinking about this paper but I’m now back on a roll and I am actually really happy with how this paragraph is turning out feel like I’m like close to being done I’m it is currently 11:45. I’ve basically been working since 11:00 this morning I’m I mean I taken breaks obviously but I am about I would say about a thousand words from being done I’m it’s about 3500 words currently I’m but my plan is I’m going to finish this paragraph I’m gonna wait to write the conclusion in the morning I also have to write up an annotated bibliography which shouldn’t be too hard I’m but I need to get that done before my meetings tomorrow this is what happens when you are a perfectionist and also somebody that works really well under pressure I for one will just keep reading and will keep doing research up until the moment when I really do need to get my work done but then I get into these situations where I’m up really late but I honestly wouldn’t have it any other way I don’t think I could do it any other way I’ve tried to get assignments done early and I just don’t they don’t turn out as well I’m and that’s not to say that I just like leave everything to last-minute I do research I write sections I do my notes and everything. that way I have everything that I need and then I’m just a just massive perfectionist about my prose and I just want it to flow really nicely I’m really critical about the way that I write especially because I had a really good supervisor an undergrad and he really helped me make my writing better and obviously it’s all a long way to go but I I feel like it has come a long long way. I’m just really picky about my writing and I just want it to be the past then it can be but I’m gonna go ahead and finish up this paragraph and go to bed and then wake up early and finish up the conclusion and the annotated bibliography and then I have to go to my meeting and then I still have to edit this video and get that up before I have to decant all my readings done for Tuesday. time management people it’s important I think it’s ironic that people ask me about my time management skills and here we are but that all being said I have been working on this for like months and now I’m going to be quiet and get to work all right I did it I finished my essay it is 1:00 in the morning but I finished everything I wrote the conclusion I am done I’m gonna proofread it once more in the morning before I send it in but I’m really happy without turned out honestly I’ve been feeling a little bit of like imposter syndrome I guess were like kind of self-doubt as I’ve been waiting for these PhD decisions and I’ve been writing as I say it’s been having the hardest time I or at least when I was writing it before because I get these moments where I feel like perhaps I am not quite equipped to be writing this kind of research and that I am not prepared for a PhD but writing that paper and getting to focus on it today really reminded me that I’m doing the right thing and I have to say like the most rewarding thing in the world is getting to write about the scholarship that I just find. interesting and seeing that there’s room and that scholarship for you to also kind of make your own addition to it it’s not 1:00 in the morning and I’m exhausted. it is time to go to sleep and I’m gonna go ahead and sign off of this video I wanted to take you guys through an essay crisis with me I am NOT one of these videos before but I want to know if you guys enjoyed it I would love to see you guys comment down below and if you guys made it all the way to the end of this video leave me a comment down below of a TV show you’re really liking at the moment and I’d love to see what shows you guys for watching but I hope you guys enjoyed this video if you guys did please give it a thumbs up if you guys are not yet subscribed please hit that subscribe button and I’ll see you guys the next video [Applause]. she loves you sure

How I Got Into Harvard (My Stats: Gpa, Sat)

How I Got Into Harvard (My Stats: Gpa, Sat)

in this video I’ll be going over the stats that got me it’s a Harvard Cornell and a few other schools that includes my GPA and transcript SAT and SAT two scores. if that is what you’re looking for then stick to the end of this video hey everyone welcome to jc’s I’m Jordan and this is the second video in my how I got into Harvard series this video would whoa this video will be split up into three parts my transcript will be the first part on my SAT and SAT twos will be the second part and the third part will kind of be a commentary on how I feel numbers play a role in the admissions offices decision. yeah let’s get to the first part just to give you guys some context on my school I go to a specialized High School in New York City very urban I’m in order to get into one of New York City’s specialized high schools you have to actually test into them but my school offers around 30 AP classes as well as post AP classes I’ll explain what those are later our GPAs are unweighted and the median GPA is 91 I’m pretty sure and just another thing we don’t rank our students in the course of my high school career I’ve taken 7 AP classes and I’ve taken the corresponding exams for each of them and my sophomore year I took ap biology in my junior year I took AP us s 3 AP English Language and Composition and ap physics 1 and in my senior year I took calculus AP English literature and comparative government with economics on all of those exams I’ve gotten fours except for AP u.s. History where I got a 5 strange it up but we’ll see for calc calc a be calm gov and English literature hopefully I got a 5 on them but I’ll find out next one we’re in two months in July Harvard has kind of a mixed dance when it comes to taking AP scores and using those as college credit kind of. I can make a video on that later on but just one thing that’s really helpful going into the 2019 2020 application season I just know that Harvard will no longer be accepting AP exams as credit for college courses at least that’s what I heard this year I’m taking to post advanced placement classes um. basically what post a PSR is like they’re kind of like AP classes except AP classes are their prerequisites one of my posting fee classes is called topics in modern physics and in order to qualify to even apply to take that class you have to have a 92 average in AP Physics one or two I think I’m not really sure and then four AP or post ap biology which is a focus on genetics you have to have at least like a ninety or something in your ap biology class the curriculums of these courses are entirely designed by my school’s faculty a lot of the teachers that we have especially when it comes to stem are like doctors in their field.

I think that’s really cool but because they’re the ones making up the curriculum it’s hard for anyone really to get out of go these classes are I took a exam in modern physics today and I was using MIT class notes as a study guide in one of their modern physics classes and actually understood what was going on. that’s cool throughout my four years of high school I’ve also taken three honors classes one in algebra 2 / trigonometry another one in pre calc which I took last year and then the one I’m taking now which is advanced Chinese conversational with a dialect in Mandarin these honors classes are kind of a step in between like regular classes and AP classes and now for the moment you’ve all been waiting for. my GPA is ninety three point nine that is unweighted my school does not weight GPAs I don’t know how that really converts on a 4.0 scale but when I’m being generous to myself I like to say I have a 94 average something to know about Harvard all the IV’s and basically any selective school you’re applying to is that these schools tend to super scores and what super scoring means is that they take the highest score in the math and writing section for all the sittings that you’ve had I took the SAT twice once in March and once in August I got literally the same score but I got different scores on my own like the different sections I’m. veyts of my highest math score and my highest reading score and that gave me a total of fourteen seventy yeah I know not the highest could be better but it’s not. super scoring is really nice and because of it I think you should take the SAT multiple times and you should also try the AC T apparently the ACE is it apparently the AC T is easier but it’s just faster. if you’re good at test taking I would say try the AC T you might like it better I never took it but I wish I did. SAT 2’s more commonly known as SAT two subject tests are smaller tests that are kind of like a piece I don’t know why we have a piece and SAT turns to me it makes no sense but these SAT two subjects s allow applicants to show their expertise in a certain like feel to Harvard and all the IV’s with the exception of some of Cornell’s colleges require you to take two SAT twos and submit those scores one in stem and one in humanities however I would recommend you taking math two one in humanities and one in science just in case you’re a science person because some schools like MIT required to send a math and a science SAT to the SAT to I submitted were math two and US history I also took literature but I did not send it I don’t know why it took it and I got a 760 in math to a 660 in US history and a 560 in literature as you can see I’ve why didn’t submit the literature 1 all of these SAT 2’s are out of 800 and I would highly recommend taking math 2 over math 1 because math 1 is basically useless also a good number of kids who take the math to exam get a cup like a perfect 800 sadly it wasn’t one of them but hopefully you will be. I recommend taking SAT 2s when you’re taking the corresponding AP course of course you can always like. study for your school doesn’t have a PS it’s just important to note that these subject tests often have topics that aren’t covered in the AP curriculum I wish I took the biology SAT – and the physics SAT – while taking those AP courses I feel like that would have been helpful for me and given me more options. don’t make my mistake take more SAT T’s his name is a star after Sagittarius a star which is the black hole in the center of the Milky Way. fun fact best teddy bear ever cost like $25 ripoff but hey Harvard gang nothing I say here is actually official it’s not like a Harvard admissions officer came to us like Jordan this is true no this is purely me on my observations and kind of some speculation that I’ve had over the past few years after seeing the stats of the kids who got accepted into Harvard from my school in the past few years I think if you have a 1450 and a 92 and above Harvard starts looking at all those applicants the same like the kids with those scores. if you’d what the 1600 is no longer worth more than a student with a 1450 or student with a 92 versus a 98 like I think they treat us all the same and that’s when they start looking at essays with extracurriculars however if you have below these scores don’t let that get you down obviously they make exception if you have its daily good extracurriculars if you’re really passionate and if you have some like special toka thinks about you then I think you have a better chance at getting in even if you have below those scores but I would say if you’re a junior or any kind of underclassmen or someone who’s looking to apply to Harvard definitely aim not don’t eat bird 14:50 like katya says a purpose stars. if you follow you land on the cloud. I would say aim for 1600 and if you get 1450 you’re cool too it’s not what you could do with your transcript once you’re a Jew dear because you junior year is kind of your last year that colleges will see actually that’s not true colleges request your mid-year score voice of your I’m senior year and they also look at your final year scores to see if they’ll receive you hopefully I took ever said this once you get all the students with above 1450 and the 92 average it’s really hard to differentiate them anymore. you have to start looking at their essays and extracurriculars if you want to see that essay that I wrote for the Harvard University supplement I will link it somewhere on the screen or in the description I don’t know it’s my only other video that’s my second video um but yeah I think if you saw this video I thought it was very helpful I would definitely recommend checking out that one because I truly feel that essay I’ll play a huge part in the admissions process also I’ll be making another video on my extracurriculars because I truly feel that my extracurriculars really did get me into Harvard as well as some of the other schools I mentioned. yeah if you found this video helpful like comment subscribe you know the vibes but I’ll speak to you guys in the next video peace

I Got Into My Dream School!? | Washington University In St. Louis Acceptance Story

hi guys it’s Izzie I would say welcome back to my channel but haven’t really made a sit down video yet I guess is kind of introducing my channel as well I kind of want to start making more college educational type videos because I’ve been watching them a lot and they’ve been really helping me out. today I’m going to be talking about how I got accepted into my dream College. first off let me look down at the little notes I took. let me just tell you the school I actually got into that was considered my dream school that I never thought I’d get into. it’s Washington University in st. Louis right ok. I was a little sophomore whenever I first went and toured Wash U and it was. intimidating and I didn’t know how I felt about the vibe just because I’ve always been a good student but I was never like top-10 in my class like I was top 10% but not top 10 and that’s what I thought you had to be in order to get into a school like that I toured there like one or two more times like in between now and my sophomore year just to see you know maybe my mind would change about it maybe I feel like I could actually do it but every time I went there I just felt like overwhelm I like wanted to go there. bad I didn’t think I could get in though. I didn’t even want to put myself through the pain of like a prying and not getting in because that would have just like broke me I think. I kind of pushed myself away from apply last semester cuz I’m a senior in high school right now. last semester in like November no September or whatever like early decision one was due around November 15th I think and I was gonna apply for that but then I was like well like I haven’t looked at any other colleges yet really and I should probably just applied Regular Decision if I apply it all to wash you just. I have okay I’m editing this right now let me be clear it wasn’t because of that it was definitely because I was scared of rejection and no one should use that as an excuse to not apply for the job they want or the dream college they want to get into or just anything you want to go after in life don’t let fear control you because if I wouldn’t have applied sorry this is getting like really deep but if I wouldn’t have applied like I I couldn’t even be making this video like I wouldn’t be going to wash you just because I was scared to apply it like that’s. dumb. you might as well just take the chance. I didn’t apply sooner or later once it became the day that like they the people who did apply a decision like found out they got in my friend Laurie I hope she doesn’t mind me using her name she got in and when I saw that I just like it just like triggered something in me made me realize like I actually do want to go there as I ended up applying early decision to later in January 2nd I think was when the deadline was and I decided to do that because seeing her get in and seeing someone that I was like somewhat close to a new like actually get into a school like that like gave me a little bit of hope. I was like if she can do like why can’t I be of similar grades and I what I was gonna say similar ACS but we actually don’t which is what freaked me out as well but I’ll get into that.

I Got Into My Dream School!? | Washington University In St. Louis Acceptance Story

I also applied to some like Safe Schools I applied to Mizzou Aires gonna stay New York Institute of Technology which isn’t really a safe school but I applied there I applied to University of Tennessee and again I applied Wash U obviously but those other four schools I actually did get into. that was all great and dandy but I got to the point where like washes dishes and dishes and we’re gonna come out for early decision too and I had not yet been rejected I had got into all the honors colleges I applied to and I was just kind of like what if this is like the one I actually want to get into what if don’t get into this one you know because like all the other ones I gather great but I really wanted to get into this one. it was just very nerve-racking by the time decisions came rolling out they were supposed to come on February 15th but my friend snapped out of me and she was like hey did you get your decision back about washy I was like no it doesn’t come out till two more days and she was like oh well my friends like just like found out their decision then I was like what. I took my email and it was like status update from washy when I was like oh my god it mind you I was driving I was literally in my car coming home from dropping my sister off at gymnastics I’m at a stoplight and I open the email because I couldn’t wait till I got home even though I was two seconds from my house and I saw that I got in and I started like screaming okay just for reference this is literally the stoplight I was at whenever I open my decision letter which I just think it’s really funny he’s a serious autism was sitting in the back and she was. confused she was like what like what’s going on like why are you screaming I was screaming and then I finally got to the house and I parts left my sister in the car she’s 15 but like I went right back out there she was like walking in whatever yeah I was like screaming I was like mom mom mom where are you at and she was like in the shower and I like busted dude it was a freaking door of the bathroom I was like mom like I got into Wash U and she’s like what and. I went in sat on the stairs and waited till she was done showering cuz my the shower choosin is like right by the stairs and I was just like crying hysterically she was like why you crying like this is a good thing I was like yes but like what like I got in like that like just doesn’t happen like I just really genuinely did not think I was going to get him I am. sorry for the amount of times I have said like and let’s just ignore it I obviously say it a lot when I’m nervous or excited and I was very nervous during this video the fact that I did was just like mind-boggling I didn’t even know how to feel because I was like oh my god I just got all this pressure I was like this means I have to actually really start like trying like obviously I try now but the difference between going to a state school and then wash you like a private see the dynamics just different I’d like just knew I was gonna have to focus a lot more than I would if I was gonna go to Mizzou which is where I was gonna go because I got into the Honors College and had a full right there.

I was gonna go there if I didn’t get into Wash U. then you know got in and I for a while I was like struggling between oh my god like we did it did I make a mistake like I have to go here now and that means I have to do well in order to because I want to go to med school. like I have to get a good GPA. that was a little bad for a while because I just like didn’t believe in myself and I was like like why did I get it and other people who applied in it like I just was like genuinely confused and shocked tonight. many emotions but it’s kind of settled down now I realize like obviously they wouldn’t have accepted me if they didn’t realize my potential okay yeah. running out of time my camera is about to die in this videos already like okay now Syria wasn’t talking me that always freaks me out when that happens anyway. I think I’m gonna make a separate video on how I actually got in like my stats what I vote for my essays and all the extracurriculars I have been part hits participating in throughout my high school career. make sure you like this video and comment down below if that’s something you’d like to see next that I hope you guys have a great rest of your day and good luck with all your college decisions and choices and applications bye

How To Study For The Sat | Tips From A Harvard Student

hey it’s best and welcome back to my channel as you can tell by the background of this video I’m no longer in my dorm room I’m actually doing an internship in China hopefully I have some video footage of that soon but in the meantime you can follow me on Instagram and snapchat links are in the description down below to see more real-time updates but today I wanted to film a requested video on how to study for the SAT I thought now would be a perfect time to release it since summer and hopefully you have more time on your hands to study for the exam a few disclaimers before I start first I’m not an official SAT tutor these are just my personal experiences and tips that I used to prepare for the test and hopefully they’ll work well for you as well and then secondly I took the exam a few years ago. I did not take the new updated SAT but I’ve read up on the changes and adjusted my strategies to fit the new exam as always I’ll have links to everything I mentioned this video in the description box. just pop that open alright let’s get started I’m just reading some off of my phone. that’s why I’m kind of looking down but first make a plan and be accountable. I would start as early as you can and make a schedule throughout the week and throughout the month. for instance like read a few chapters per day and then take practice tests every other week something like that and then also reach out to a sibling a parent or a friend to hold you accountable to your plan I know from personal experience it’s really hard to hold yourself accountable. if you have someone else there who knows what you want to do who knows your goals then it’ll make your life much easier second practice I know this is really obvious but I think the best way to succeed on the SAT is to take a lot of practice exams I use the college board prep book to help me study since that is made by the people who makes the actual SAT.

I’m going to link the latest addition down below for practicing there are a few tips and strategies I would suggest you do the first you should use a timer this will help you assess how much time you really need per section and for question and if you’ve run out of time then you’ll know that you need to be faster when you’re taking the test secondly review your practice test carefully what I mean by this is you should as you’re taking each practice exam circle the questions that you know you don’t know and after you finish the test and check your answers your first priority should be the non circled questions that you got wrong because those are the questions that you thought you knew but you really did it which means something was wrong in the process of your thinking or reading the question and you should really review those first your second priority should be the questions that you got right that you circled means that those are the questions that you thought you didn’t knew but somehow you got them right. maybe you misinterpreted the question or you guessed and either way because you thought you didn’t knew them you should definitely go over them then your third priority should be the questions that you got wrong that were circled. the ones you thought you got wrong and you actually did get wrong because you still got those wrong. you should go over and make sure you consolidate that material then your last priority should be going over the questions you got right which were not circled because you know that material pretty well and honestly you don’t need to do too much review photos for those questions this is a very structured way of prioritizing your review which i think is really important you always tend to go over the questions we already know because they make us feel good we already know them we got some right and. why not continue that cycle of positive emotions and thinking but it’s not going to help you in the long run especially for tests. now I’m going to go into a more specific advice for each of the sections first for math practice practice practice there’s really no specific advice I can give you for math because it’s hard to really study for math without just practicing the types of questions SAT will ask. I would just suggest going through the SAT prep book and doing the practice Shinzon the concepts you don’t understand very well and then just taking a bunch of full-length practice exams I mean there’s really not much to it other than just making sure you know the concepts and then understanding the questions they will be asking for reading this is something that I didn’t do a lot but I know it’s helped others just skim the questions before you do their reading that way when you’re doing the reading you already know what to look out for. reading the questions beforehand almost acts like a primer for when you actually analyze the text and when you are reading the text be actively engaged. have a pencil on your hand and mark up any parts of the passage that you recall or mention in the questions or just interesting parts that you think might be relevant later I also do that whenever I’m reading for a class or even just for fun it helps keep my mind more engaged on what I’m reading then for writing Freeza sentences out loud or kind of whisper them or just you know in your head imagine you saying them and I was definitely guilty of doing this test Center I probably just whisper I don’t know if people around me heard me but is really helpful especially for native speakers once you’ve read a sentence out loud to tell it’s wrong with them and it I would definitely recommend doing this when you’re editing papers for school or for class it’s very helpful and then lastly for the essay portion I would strongly recommend reading the prompt first before you read the passage they ask you to analyze because it’ll again just like the reading section tell you what to look for and that will be really helpful as you read the passage which once again you should be actively engaged with. hold the pencil right in your hand and just scribble something margin of when you’re writing your essay I would suggest brainstorming some ideas and constructing a main argument just in the first two minutes constructing a main argument or several main arguments and then picking your best one and moving forward with it and picking one that can be separated into multiple ideas or body paragraphs because it’s really happy you should be structuring your s and lastly you should definitely read over previous essays that’s the best way to prepare I think I’m going to leave a link down below to some ones I found online and they offer the scorer’s feedback. you can see what they’re looking for in terms of like how you’re reading the text how you’re analyzing it and your writing style as always try to read over your essay once you’ve finished it because grammar mistakes are really just kind of like they shouldn’t be happening I know that you often don’t have time to read over the essay but if you can please do it will definitely help and also please try to have good handwriting it’ll help your score because if a score has been reading 10 essays a day and one of and all of them have been terrible handwriting and then yours is just lovely and very easily read they’ll feel. much better and are likely to grade you higher that’s all the advice I have for you today I hope that was helpful if it was be sure to give this video a like and subscribe to my channel for more videos like this I’m hoping to do a how to get into Harvard one very soon because I know it’s been highly requested on this channel I’m hoping to post more regularly because I have some more free time in the summer but fingers crossed it doesn’t get too hectic and busy up in here and my boyfriend’s visiting soon. we’re going to be filming some fun videos as always comment down below what you like to see me film next and I’ll see you next time bye Oh
